An AIEP homestay is an exciting experience for international students and Connecticut families!

AIEP homestays are a very special and unique way for international students to become familiar with the culture and surroundings of a new area, while completing their studies in Connecticut. AIEP Homestays provide international students a chance to experience Connecticut and the United States first-hand, and allows them to get the most out of their experience by living with a welcoming Connecticut host family.

AIEP homestays are equally rewarding to the host family, since they also get to experience a foreign culture directly through their international student. While most people may consider homestays and student exchange programs to be the same thing, there are a few specific differences between the two programs. While foreign exchange experiences and homestays are equally incredible experiences for international students, there are a few ways that they differ from each other.

Let’s take a look at some of those differences:

Homestay Students Stay With an American Family in Connecticut

Homestay students will find that they are welcomed into a safe and caring American family environment. They will also be made welcome in the community, and introduced to the surrounding areas. They will also have a safe place to stay, and a loving and caring family to come home to. Foreign exchange students typically stay with American families as well, but with some foreign exchange programs the student will live in a dorm while attending a boarding school. While AIEP homestay students are required to pay a yearly program fee to stay with their American host family, it is worth the extra cost and a much better alternative to living alone in a dorm. AIEP homestay families are compensated with a monthly stipend to offset the costs of hosting, while exchange students’ families generally are not.

Students are Long-Term

AIEP homestay students travel abroad to begin or complete their high school education in Connecticut, and the duration of their homestay can last from one to four years with students returning to their home country for the summer vacation – depending on how long a host family would like to host their student. Student exchanges generally last a few months to a year at most. Since AIEP homestay student programs usually last for a longer period of time, students become well acquainted with the American culture and English language, and will have an opportunity to learn what it’s like to live in another country. AIEP homestay students also study in Connecticut with the intention of graduating high school and studying in an American university or college.

Complete Immersion in English

AIEP homestay students will also have the advantage of being able to be a part of the family, participate in activities with their American family and getting a chance to live life in another country. This also allows students to have a complete immersion in the English language – both in the home and at school while challenging themselves to speak English 24/7. Student exchange programs also offer a similar opportunity to be immersed in English, however since student exchange programs are usually much shorter duration, and in some situations involve staying in a dorm setting with other international students, the level of immersion varies greatly.

No Exchange Necessary

While most of the student exchange programs operate under a program that exchanges students from both countries, AIEP homestay students only go one way. The student comes to America to complete their education, and at the same time they get to experience and learn about another culture first hand. No exchange necessary!

Students Need to Pay for Their Tuition

Since AIEP homestay students study in Connecticut to complete their high school education, they must also have their tuition paid in full and attend a high school full-time while living in Connecticut. Foreign exchange programs are similar, requiring students to pay for the cost of tuition. However, with some foreign exchange programs, scholarships are available and the fee is usually pro-rated for the year as they are usually here short-term.

Students Need to Attend a Private School

Most foreign exchange programs typically operate under a public school program. AIEP homestay students however, only attend private day schools in Connecticut.
